Title: The Necessary Suffering
Scripture: Luke 24:26

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were confused. Jesus had died. They thought He was the Messiah. Now reports of His resurrection seemed like empty tales. Their hopes lay shattered. They had expected glory, not a cross. They had expected victory, not defeat. Their disappointment shows how little they understood God's plan.

Jesus corrects their thinking with one simple question: "Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things?" The word necessary carries weight. It means the cross wasn't Plan B. It wasn't a tragic accident. It was God's eternal purpose. The suffering of Christ was required. It had to happen this way.

Many people still stumble over this. They want a Jesus who brings success and happiness. They want a Christianity without the cross. But Jesus tells us that suffering comes first, then glory. The crown comes only after the crucifixion. This is how God works. He brings life through death. He brings joy through sorrow. He brings exaltation through humiliation.

This changes how we view our own suffering. When life hurts, we shouldn't be surprised. Jesus told us to take up our cross and follow Him. The Christian life includes hardship. It includes disappointment. It includes pain. But like Christ's suffering, ours is not pointless. God uses it to shape us. He uses it to refine us. He uses it to prepare us for glory.

The world's pattern is glory first, suffering later if necessary. God's pattern is the opposite. He takes us down before He lifts us up. He breaks us before He builds us. This feels wrong to our natural minds. But God's ways are not our ways. His wisdom surpasses our understanding. We must trust His pattern, even when it hurts.

Prayer: Lord, help us accept that suffering is part of Your plan. Teach us to trust Your wisdom when we face hardship. Remind us that Christ's suffering was necessary before His glory. Give us strength to endure our own crosses, knowing that You work all things for our good. Amen.
