Title: Be Still and Know
Scripture: Psalm 46:10

"Be still, and know that I am God." These eight words cut against everything our culture tells us. We live in a world that rewards hustle, that measures worth by productivity, that fills every quiet moment with noise. But God commands us to stop. To cease striving. To shut our mouths and open our ears. This isn't a gentle suggestion. It's a direct order from the One who spoke the universe into existence.

The Hebrew word for "be still" means to let drop, to release, to stop hanging on. It's what you do when you finally quit trying to control everything. Most of our anxiety comes from clutching things that were never ours to hold. Your job security, your children's future, your health, your reputation. God says: Drop it. Stop white-knuckling your life. When we release our grip on these things, we discover that God was holding us the whole time.

"Know that I am God." This knowing isn't head knowledge. It's not theological information you can look up online. It's the kind of knowing that comes when you finally stop moving long enough to see reality. God is God. You are not. Your boss is not. Your bank account is not. Your problems are not. When you know this in your bones, everything changes. The worst thing that can happen to a Christian is that God remains God. The best thing that can happen is exactly the same.

This command comes right after the psalmist describes mountains falling into the sea and nations in uproar. Be still when the world seems to be ending. Be still when your world actually is ending. The timing matters. God doesn't tell us to be still after everything gets fixed. He tells us to be still in the middle of the mess. Your stillness isn't dependent on your circumstances. It's dependent on your God.

You want practical? Here's what this looks like. Set a timer for ten minutes today. Sit in a chair. No phone. No music. No podcast. Just you and God. When your mind races to your to-do list, gently redirect it to this truth: God is God. When anxiety bubbles up about that conversation you need to have, return to this: God is God. You won't feel anything dramatic. You might feel bored. That's fine. Spiritual maturity often looks like boredom to the undisciplined eye. Do it again tomorrow. And the next day.

This isn't Eastern meditation where you empty your mind. This is Christian meditation where you fill your mind with God. You don't need special techniques or trained guides. You need to obey. Be still. Know that he is God. The order matters. First comes the stillness, then comes the knowing. Most of us try to know God while maintaining our frantic pace. It doesn't work that way. The kingdom of God has an entrance requirement: you must stop.

Prayer: Lord, we confess that we trust our own efforts more than we trust you. Teach us to be still. Not because our problems are small, but because you are great. Help us to drop our anxious striving and know that you are God, today and every day. Amen.
