Title: Joshua's Hard Word
Scripture: Joshua 24:19

Joshua just finished pressing Israel to swear sole loyalty to the Lord. The people answered with gusto: "We will serve the Lord." You would expect Joshua to pat them on the back and send them home. Instead he throws cold water on their enthusiasm. "You are not able to serve the Lord, for He is a holy God." That line stops the celebration cold.

He is not questioning God's power; he is exposing theirs. Joshua knows the track record. These same families had watched manna fall, then complained about the menu. They saw the Red Sea open, then trembled at giants. Joshua will not let them confuse excitement with ability. Real service to a holy God demands more than good intentions.

The word "holy" is the hinge. Holy means God is set apart, pure, uncompromising. He never winks at rebellion, never shrugs at half-hearted worship. Serving Him is not like joining a club; it is like standing before a consuming fire. Joshua wants them to feel the weight so they will stop leaning on their own resolve.

This is the first lesson for us too. We make promises in worship, at small-group night, in crisis. "I will change. I will read the Bible daily. I will stop that sin." The spirit is willing, but the flesh is still weak. Joshua's warning protects us from the cycle of hype, failure, and shame. We need to hear, "You cannot do this," before we ever learn to depend on the One who can.

So what do we do? We come back to the gospel. Israel's future failures would indeed bury them under judgment, yet God would still keep a remnant by His grace. We live after the cross, where Christ obeyed in our place and gives us His Spirit. We still cannot serve God in our own strength, but the risen Jesus walks with us and carries us when we fall. The pressure is off self-confidence and onto Christ-confidence.

That shift changes daily decisions. Before you promise to conquer a habit, admit you cannot. Ask the Holy Spirit for today's strength. When you fail, confess quickly and get back up. Over time the same Spirit who said, "You cannot," begins to prove, "But I can in you." The holy God who scared Israel becomes the faithful God who sanctifies us.

Prayer: Lord, we admit our best promises leak. Thank You that Jesus kept every promise for us and now lives to keep us. Give us today's portion of humility and Spirit-power so our service rests on Your ability, not ours. Amen.
