Title: Growing Up into Christ
Scripture: Ephesians 4:13

Paul says God gave pastors and teachers to equip the saints "until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." That is a mouthful, but it boils down to one thing: God wants His people to grow up. Not to stay as spiritual children, but to become mature followers of Jesus Christ.

Notice Paul says "we all." This is not just for the super-spiritual or the professionals. Every Christian is meant to grow. The goal is unity in the faith and a true knowledge of the Son of God. That means we know what we believe and we know whom we believe. We are not tossed around by every new teaching that comes along. We have settled convictions about Jesus, rooted in Scripture.

The phrase "mature manhood" does not mean only men grow up. Paul is using the word "man" to speak of humanity. He means full-grown, not childish. A mature Christian thinks clearly about sin, grace, and salvation. He does not throw tantrums when life gets hard. She does not pout when the church does not meet her preferences. Maturity shows up in steady obedience, even when no one is watching.

Paul piles on one more phrase: "to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." That is the bull's-eye. We are not aiming at being nicer people or better church members. We are aiming at Christ Himself. The more we know Him, the more we become like Him. His love shapes our love. His patience shapes our patience. His courage shapes our courage. The Holy Spirit is at work making us look like Jesus, not just act like Him.

This is why church matters. You cannot grow into Christ on your own. God uses pastors, teachers, and the whole body to equip you. You need the Word preached, the sacraments administered, and the saints around you. When you skip church, you are saying, "I do not need the means God uses to make me mature." That is like a sapling saying, "I do not need sunlight or rain." You will stay stunted.

So ask yourself: am I growing? Do I know more about Jesus this year than last year? Do I handle trials better? Do I sin less and love more? If the answer is no, do not despair. Start where you are. Show up to worship. Listen to the sermon like your life depends on it, because it does. Read your Bible daily, even five minutes. Pray honest prayers. God will do the growing. He never fails to finish what He starts.

Prayer: Lord, we want to grow up. Forgive us for staying childish and self-centered. Use Your Word and Your people to make us more like Jesus. Keep us steady until we reach the full measure of His stature. Amen.
