Title: We Have Left Everything
Scripture: Mark 10:28
Peter's words sound almost like a complaint. "We have left everything and followed you." He's looking at the rich young ruler who walked away, and he's comparing that man's refusal to his own sacrifice. The disciples had left homes, jobs, families. They had given up security and comfort. Now Peter wants to know, "Was it worth it?"
Jesus doesn't rebuke Peter for asking. He understands that following Him costs something. Every true disciple leaves behind things they once held dear. For some it's wealth. For others it's reputation, relationships, or dreams they had for their life. The call to follow Christ always requires leaving something behind.
But here's what we must understand. Peter thinks in terms of loss, but Jesus thinks in terms of gain. We see what we've left. Jesus sees what we're receiving. The disciples had left fishing boats and tax booths. They had walked away from predictable lives. But they were gaining something far greater, something they couldn't yet see.
This is where faith comes in. We don't follow Jesus because we've calculated that it will make our lives easier. We follow Him because He is worthy of our obedience. We trust that what He gives us in return, though we may not see it now, is better than anything we've left behind. Faith believes that Christ Himself is the great reward.
When you feel the loss of what you've given up for Christ, remember this. Every sacrifice made for Jesus is noticed by Him. Every comfort left behind, every dream surrendered, every relationship that suffers because of your faith. He sees it all. And He promises that no one who has left anything for His sake will fail to receive a hundredfold return, both now and in the age to come.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we count the cost of following You with resentment. Help us to see that You are always worth whatever we must leave behind. Strengthen our faith to trust that what You give exceeds anything we lose. Amen.
