Title: Every Promise Kept in Christ
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:20
Paul writes that every promise God has ever made finds its "Yes" in Jesus. That's a staggering claim when you think about it. Every covenant, every blessing, every word of hope God spoke to Abraham, Moses, David, and the prophets, all land on one person: Jesus Christ. Not some promises. Not most promises. Every single one.
This means the Bible isn't a grab bag of disconnected blessings. It's one story that threads together perfectly in Christ. When God told Adam and Eve the seed of the woman would crush the serpent, that promise was kept at Calvary. When he told Abraham all nations would be blessed through him, that promise was fulfilled when Gentiles like us were brought into the church. When Isaiah said the suffering servant would bear our griefs, that promise was stamped "Yes" when Jesus rose from the dead.
But here's what this does for us daily. We don't have to wonder if God will keep his word to us. In Christ, God has already said "Yes" to every promise we need for salvation and godliness. When we doubt our forgiveness, we look to the cross where God said "Yes" to pardoning sinners. When we fear death, we look to the empty tomb where God said "Yes" to resurrection life. When we feel abandoned, we remember Jesus who cried "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" so we would never be forsaken.
This verse also shows us how to read our Bibles. We're not looking for random verses to claim. We're looking for how each passage points us to Christ. The promises made to Israel, the Psalms of David, the prophecies of Isaiah, all find their fulfillment in Jesus. When we read Scripture this way, the whole book becomes a unified witness to God's faithfulness in Christ.
Paul adds that through Jesus we say "Amen" to God's promises. That's not just religious talk. "Amen" means we agree with what God has said and stake our lives on it. When we trust Jesus, we're not merely accepting a set of doctrines. We're saying "Yes" back to God's "Yes." We're banking everything on the fact that God keeps his word, even when we can't see how. This is the daily posture of faith: receiving God's promises in Christ and resting on them.
Prayer: Father, thank you that you never break a promise. Help us to see every promise you have made is secured for us in Jesus. When we doubt, remind us that Christ is your eternal "Yes" to us. Make us people who say "Amen" to your word with our whole lives. Amen.
