John 21:16
“He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.””

Title: Jesus Restores Peter
Scripture: John 21:16
Jesus asked Peter the same question three times. Each time Peter answered, and each time Jesus gave him a command. This second question cuts to the heart of Christian service. Jesus does not ask if Peter has impressive gifts, or clever strategies, or a big platform. He asks, “Do you love me?” Everything else flows from that.
Peter had bragged that he loved Jesus more than the others did. Then he denied Jesus three times in the courtyard. Now he is humbled. He no longer compares himself to the other disciples. He simply says, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He trusts Jesus to judge his heart, not his track record.
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say, “Fix yourself first.” He does not say, “Prove it with a flawless week.” He takes Peter as he is: weary, ashamed, and still wet from swimming ashore. He restores him on the spot. The issue is not perfection, but direction. Does Peter want Jesus more than he wants the old life of fishing? The answer is yes.
Therefore Jesus gives him work: “Tend my sheep.” Love for the Shepherd always shows up in care for the flock. That means teaching the Bible accurately, visiting the sick, watching over the children, and confronting error when it appears. It is ordinary, patient, often unseen work. But Jesus calls it his own work. When we feed and protect the church, we are serving Christ directly.
Some of you carry a heavy memory of letting Jesus down. You think your failure disqualifies you from useful service. Look at Peter. Restoration is not earned by extra devotion; it is received by honest confession. Tell Jesus you love him, and let him assign you your post. The church needs exactly that kind of rescued sinner to lead, serve, and comfort others.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we have denied you in small and large ways. Thank you for asking us again, “Do you love me?” We say yes. Put us to work among your people, and keep us faithful. Amen.
