This joy is not the same as being happy. Happiness depends on what happens to you. Joy depends on what Jesus has done for you. The disciples are about to watch Jesus be arrested, beaten, and crucified. Their world will fall apart. But Jesus says He is giving them His joy, and it will stay full even when everything else goes empty.
The joy Jesus gives is connected to the words He has just spoken. He told them He is the true vine and they are the branches. He told them to abide in His love by keeping His commandments. This means joy comes from knowing you are connected to Christ and living in obedience to Him. When you try to find joy anywhere else, it will always leak out.
Many Christians live with half-full joy because they are trying to fill their tank with the wrong things. They think joy will come if their circumstances improve, or if they find the right spouse, or if they finally get recognition. But Jesus says His joy is already available to you. It is complete. It does not need anything added to it.
This joy shows up in strange places. It shows up when you are visiting someone in the hospital and you feel a strange peace. It shows up when you give money you cannot afford to give and you feel rich. It shows up when you confess sin and feel clean instead of ashamed. These are moments when Christ's joy is leaking out of you, proving that it is really there.
You do not work up this joy. You receive it by believing what Jesus says is true. You have been chosen by Christ. You have been loved by the Father. You have been appointed to bear fruit that will last. These facts do not change when your feelings change. When you anchor your heart to these truths, the joy of Christ will hold you steady even when your emotions are all over the map.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we spend so much energy chasing feelings that fade. Teach us to rest in the joy You have already given us. Help us believe that Your joy is enough, even when our hearts are heavy. Make our joy full by making us full of You. Amen.
