Title: Despised and Rejected
Scripture: Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

This verse stops us cold. The prophet isn't describing some minor inconvenience. He's showing us the Messiah's deepest shame. The eternal Son of God came to his own people, and they wanted nothing to do with him. They didn't just ignore him. They turned away in disgust. They treated him like something rotten.

The words are brutal. Despised. Rejected. That's how the world saw Jesus. Not as a great teacher. Not as a miracle worker. As someone to avoid. The religious leaders hated him. The crowds mocked him. His own disciples abandoned him. This was no accidental misunderstanding. This was deliberate rejection of God's Son.

But here's what should shake us. We would've done the same. We like to think we'd recognize Jesus if he walked into our church. We wouldn't. Our hearts are no different from those first-century Jews. We're just as quick to reject him when his teachings get uncomfortable. When he demands we forgive our enemies. When he tells us to stop loving money. When he says we must die to ourselves.

The wonder isn't that Jesus was rejected. The wonder is that he kept coming. He didn't turn back when the crowds jeered. He didn't call down angels when they spit on him. He kept walking toward the cross. Toward the nails. Toward the rejection that would save his enemies. That's how much he loved us.

This changes how we face rejection. When your coworkers mock your faith. When your family thinks you're extreme. When the world calls you foolish for following Christ. You're not walking some strange path. You're walking the exact road Jesus walked. He knows what it feels like. He felt it deeper than you ever will.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we rejected you, yet you loved us to the end. Help us endure rejection for your sake, knowing you were rejected first. Make us faithful when following you costs us comfort, reputation, or friends. Amen.
