Matthew 7:13-14
““Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it. How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.”

Title: The Narrow Gate
Scripture: Matthew 7:13-14

Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a warning that should stop us cold. Most people are headed to destruction. Not just a few. Most. And they're walking confidently toward it on a wide road that feels right. The gate to life is narrow, and the path is hard. Few find it.

This isn't what we want to hear. We like to think most people are basically good and will end up okay. But Jesus says the majority are on the wrong road. The wide gate isn't marked "Hell This Way." It looks religious. It looks successful. It looks like the American dream. But it leads to death.

The narrow gate is Jesus himself. He told his disciples, "I am the way" (John 14:6). Not one way among many. The way. The hard path isn't hard because Jesus makes it difficult. It's hard because it requires dying to yourself. It means saying no to your favorite sins. It means being different from your neighbors and coworkers. It means trusting Christ's righteousness instead of your own.

Many people think they're Christians because they believe in God or go to church. But Jesus says the majority are deceived. They're on the religious road that doesn't require repentance. They want Jesus as their helper, not their Lord. They want eternal life without giving up control. That road ends in destruction.

The narrow path isn't popular. You'll walk with a small group while the crowd rushes past you toward destruction. You'll look foolish to your coworkers when you won't join their gossip. Your family will think you're extreme when you prioritize church over their plans. But this hard path leads to life. Real life. Eternal life.

Ask yourself today: Which road am I on? Not which road was I on when I prayed a prayer as a child. Which road am I walking right now? Does my life look different from the world around me? Do my priorities, my money, my time, my relationships show that I'm following Jesus on the hard path? Or am I just another religious person on the broad road?

Prayer: Lord, we confess that we often want the easy way. We want to follow you without standing out. We want eternal life without dying to ourselves. Show us which road we're really on. Give us grace to enter through the narrow gate and walk the hard path of obedience. Help us to count the cost and follow you anyway. Amen.
