Title: Jesus Knows Better Than to Trust Us
Scripture: John 2:24-25

Jesus had just finished clearing the temple and performing signs in Jerusalem. Many people saw the miracles and believed in his name. But John tells us something that should stop us in our tracks. Jesus did not entrust himself to these people. He knew what was inside them, and he refused to place his confidence in their faith.

This is a sobering passage. We like to think our faith is strong and pure. We assume Jesus looks at our belief and feels honored by it. But Jesus sees through every mixed motive. He knows when we come to him for healing but not for holiness. He sees when we want his blessings but not his lordship. Our hearts are like glass houses to him, and he examines every room.

The word "believe" here doesn't mean saving faith. These people believed Jesus was a miracle worker. They believed he could help them. But Jesus knew their faith wouldn't last when the crowds turned against him. He knew they would shout "Crucify him" just a few years later. Their faith was shallow, rooted in excitement rather than genuine repentance.

This is why we need more than religious feelings. We need the kind of faith that God himself gives. The faith that perseveres isn't something we work up in ourselves. It's a gift that changes our hearts at the deepest level. Jesus doesn't trust our natural religious impulses because he knows they will fail us when persecution comes or when following him costs us something.

The good news is that Jesus doesn't reject these weak believers. He just refuses to build his kingdom on their shifting sand. Instead, he prays for them and teaches them and works in them until their faith becomes real. He knows our hearts completely, yet he doesn't walk away. He stays and transforms us from the inside out.

Prayer: Lord, we confess that our faith is often weak and mixed with selfish motives. Thank you for not leaving us in our shallowness, but for working in us true faith that endures. Make our trust in you genuine and lasting. Amen.
