One day they finally asked Him the question that had been burning in them: "Lord, teach us to pray." They did not ask how to raise the dead or walk on water. They asked for prayer. Notice that Jesus did not hand them a book on prayer techniques. He did not give them five steps to a better prayer life. He simply gave them words to speak. "When you pray, say..." Prayer is not complicated. It is talking to your Father who loves you. The disciples needed words because they did not know what to say. Most of us are the same.
This request shows us our constant need for Jesus. We never outgrow our need to be taught by Him. Even after walking with Him for years, the disciples still needed instruction. Prayer is not natural to us. We must be taught. The good news is that Jesus is willing to teach us. He is not hiding the secrets of prayer from His people.
The prayer Jesus taught them changed everything. It gave them access to the throne room of heaven. It gave them words for their worries, their needs, their sins. We still use those words today because they still work. When you do not know what to pray, start with the Lord's Prayer. Let Jesus teach you how to talk to His Father. He is still teaching His people to pray.
Prayer: Father, we are like the disciples. We see Your power in Jesus, but we do not know how to speak to You. Teach us to pray. Give us simple words that come from our hearts. Help us to trust that You hear us and love us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
