Jesus spoke these words to His disciples on the night before He died. They were anxious, confused, and probably afraid. He had just told them He was leaving, and their world was about to fall apart. Into their fear, Jesus speaks this promise: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you."
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not promise to remove every problem. He does not promise that life will be easy. In fact, He tells them that very soon they will scatter and leave Him alone. Yet even in their coming failure, He offers them peace.
The peace Jesus gives is fundamentally different from what the world offers. The world gives peace only when circumstances are good. When your health is good, when your bank account is full, when your relationships are smooth. The world takes away peace when those things crumble. But Jesus gives peace that remains even when everything falls apart.
This peace comes from knowing who is in control. Jesus says, "Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." Why? Because He is going to the cross, and the cross is not a tragedy. It is the deliberate plan of God to save sinners. When you understand that your life is held in the hands of this same Jesus, you can have peace even in chaos.
You need this peace today. Maybe your marriage is strained. Perhaps your child is wandering from the Lord. Maybe the doctor just used words like "cancer" or "incurable." Or maybe you just feel the constant pressure of making ends meet. Whatever your trouble, Jesus offers you His peace right now.
This peace is not something you work up. It is something Jesus gives. You receive it by faith. You trust that He is not only aware of your situation but actively working in it for your good and His glory. When you believe this, your heart can be still even when everything around you is falling apart.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we confess that we often let our hearts be troubled by things we cannot control. Help us to receive the peace that You freely give. Teach us to trust You when we cannot see what You are doing. Calm our anxious hearts with the truth that You are sovereign and good. Amen.
