Luke 14:26-27
““If anyone comes to me, and doesn’t disregard his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can’t be my disciple. Whoever doesn’t bear his own cross, and come after me, can’t be my disciple.”

Title: Hating Your Family for Jesus
Scripture: Luke 14:26-27

Jesus says something here that makes us uncomfortable. He says we must hate our father and mother, our wife and children, our brothers and sisters, and even our own life. He says we must carry our cross and follow Him. These are hard words, but we need to understand what Jesus means.

Jesus isn't telling us to have bitter hatred toward our families. The Bible commands us to honor our parents and love our spouses. What Jesus is doing is using strong language to make a point. He's saying that our love for Him must be so great that our love for family looks like hatred by comparison. Following Christ must be our highest priority.

This means that when your family wants you to compromise your faith, you choose Jesus. When your parents pressure you to skip church for something else, you choose Jesus. When your friends mock you for being a Christian, you don't back down. Your loyalty to Christ must come before every other relationship.

Jesus also says we must carry our cross. In His day, the cross meant death and shame. He's telling us that following Him will cost us. It might cost us relationships, comfort, or reputation. It might cost us our plans for our life. But we're called to follow Him anyway, even when it's hard.

Many people want a comfortable Christianity. They want Jesus plus their comfortable life. But Jesus doesn't offer that. He demands first place in everything. He demands that we die to ourselves daily. This isn't popular, but it's what true discipleship looks like.

Ask yourself: Are you trying to fit Jesus into your life, or are you building your life around Jesus? Do your choices show that Jesus is more important than even your closest relationships? These questions reveal whether you're truly following Christ or just playing church.

Prayer: Lord, we confess that we often put other relationships ahead of You. Forgive us for trying to follow You on our own terms. Give us the strength to love You above all else and to carry whatever cross You give us. Help us to count the cost honestly and follow You completely. Amen.
