As we draw near to the celebration of our Savior's birth, let us meditate upon the prophetic words of Isaiah 9:6-7, which declare, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."
In these verses, we find a profound declaration of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. He is not only the child born and the son given, but He is also the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Each of these titles reveals a different aspect of His divine nature and His mission to save His people from their sins.
As the Wonderful Counselor, Jesus is the one who provides guidance and wisdom to those who seek Him. He is the source of all truth and knowledge, and His counsel is perfect and trustworthy. In John 14:6, Jesus declares, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
As the Mighty God, Jesus is the one who has the power to save and deliver His people from their enemies. He is the one who can conquer sin and death and bring about eternal life. In Colossians 1:15-20, we read that Jesus is "the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation... all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together... For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."
As the Everlasting Father, Jesus is the one who provides love and care for His people. He is the one who nurtures and protects us, and who provides for our every need. In John 10:11, Jesus says, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
As the Prince of Peace, Jesus is the one who brings peace and reconciliation between God and man. He is the one who breaks down the barriers of sin and hostility and brings about a new creation. In Ephesians 2:14-16, we read that Jesus "himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility."
As we reflect on these titles of our Savior, let us be filled with gratitude and praise for His coming. Let us also remember that His government and peace will have no end, and that He will rule over His kingdom with justice and righteousness forevermore. May we seek to follow Him as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, and may we look forward with hope and anticipation to the day when He will return to establish His kingdom in its fullness.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Savior and King. We praise you for His many titles and the ways in which He reveals your love and grace to us. We ask that you would help us to follow Him as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, and that we would look forward with hope and anticipation to His return. In His name we pray, Amen.
