Matthew 5:30
“If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.”

Title: Cut It Off
Scripture: Matthew 5:30

Jesus says if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. He’s not giving medical advice. He’s showing us how seriously we should take sin. Eternal life is at stake, and sin is the poison that kills. Better to lose a hand now than lose your soul forever.

We like to negotiate with sin. We tell ourselves we can manage it, keep it under control. Jesus says kill it. Radical amputation is the only answer when something in your life keeps dragging you toward hell. This isn’t about self-harm, it’s about self-denial. It’s about doing whatever it takes to flee from temptation.

Maybe for you it’s not a literal hand. Maybe it’s your phone after midnight. Maybe it’s that friendship that always ends up in gossip. Maybe it’s the bottle you keep hidden. Whatever keeps tripping you up, Jesus says get rid of it. Stop making excuses. Stop planning to deal with it later. Cut it off now.

This sounds harsh until you remember what Jesus did for you. He didn’t negotiate with your sin. He nailed it to the cross. He suffered the hell you deserve so you could be free. When you see the cross, radical amputation stops looking like punishment and starts looking like freedom. Why would you cling to something that cost Christ everything?

You can’t do this halfway. Keeping one finger on the sin will drag your whole body to hell. Ask God to show you what needs to go. Then take the knife. Your church family will help you. Your elders will pray with you. But you have to swing the blade. Better pain now than regret forever.

Prayer: Lord, we’re so good at making peace with our sin. Give us the courage to kill it. Show us what needs to go, and give us strength to cut it off. Thank you that Christ was cut off for us so we could be saved. Amen.
