Title: Be Holy Because God Is Holy
Scripture: 1 Peter 1:16

Peter doesn't give us a suggestion here. He gives us a command straight from God's mouth. "Be holy, because I am holy." This isn't Moses talking to Israel on Mount Sinai. This is Peter talking to Christians scattered across Asia Minor, and he's talking to you too. God hasn't lowered His standard for His people. He still demands holiness, not just from prophets and priests, but from ordinary believers trying to pay bills and raise kids.

The word holy means set apart, different, belonging to God. When God says "be holy," He's not telling you to try harder or clean up your act. He's telling you to live like someone who belongs to Him, not to this world. This means your marriage should look different than your neighbor's marriage. Your business practices should look different than your competitor's. Your entertainment choices should look different than your coworker's. Not because you're better, but because you're His.

Here's what this doesn't mean. It doesn't mean you need to achieve sinless perfection before God accepts you. Peter already told these same Christians they were chosen by God and saved by Christ's blood. Your holiness doesn't earn God's love. It shows that you already have it. When you became a Christian, God gave you His Spirit to make you holy. The command to be holy is the command to become what God has already declared you to be in Christ.

So what does holy living look like in real life? It looks like forgiving your spouse when they don't deserve it, because God forgave you when you didn't deserve it. It looks like walking away from the dirty joke at work, because you represent a clean God. It looks like giving your money to help believers in need, because God gave His Son to meet your greatest need. Holiness isn't about following a list of rules. It's about living like someone who bears God's name.

You won't do this perfectly. Peter knew these Christians would fail, and you will too. But failure isn't an excuse to stop pursuing holiness. It's a reason to run back to Christ, who perfectly obeyed in your place. When you sin, confess it immediately. Don't wallow in guilt, but don't brush it off either. Remember that Christ's blood covers every failure, and His Spirit gives power for tomorrow's battles. God isn't shocked by your sin, but He won't leave you there either.

Prayer: Father, we confess that we often live like we belong to this world, not to You. Forgive us for thinking Your command to be holy is too hard or doesn't apply to ordinary life. Thank You that Christ was perfectly holy for us, and that Your Spirit is making us holy now. Help us today to live as people who bear Your name. When we fail, bring us back to Christ. When we succeed, give us humility. Make us holy, because You are holy. Amen.
