Title: Turn the Other Cheek
Scripture: Matthew 5:39

Jesus said, "Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." This is one of the hardest commands in the Bible. We hear it and immediately start looking for loopholes. But Jesus meant exactly what he said.

In Jesus' day, a slap on the cheek wasn't assault. It was an insult. When someone slapped you, they were saying, "You're beneath me." It was how masters treated servants, or Romans treated Jews. The normal response was to fight back, to defend your honor. But Jesus tells his followers to absorb the insult instead.

This isn't about being a doormat. It's about refusing to play the world's game of revenge and honor. When you turn the other cheek, you're saying, "Your insult doesn't define me. My identity comes from God, not from what you think of me." You're also refusing to let evil control you. The person who retaliates is controlled by the one who struck first.

Jesus practiced what he preached. When they mocked him, beat him, and crucified him, he didn't retaliate. He prayed, "Father, forgive them." He absorbed evil without passing it on. That's what we're called to do. Not because we're weak, but because we're following our Master.

This plays out in everyday life more than we think. When your coworker spreads rumors about you, when your spouse insults you in front of friends, when someone cuts you off in traffic, your instinct is to strike back. Jesus says, "Let it go. Don't let their sin become your sin. Trust me to defend you in the right way at the right time."

This doesn't mean you never confront sin or seek justice. It means you don't take revenge into your own hands. You refuse to let bitterness take root. You break the cycle of retaliation that destroys relationships and poisons communities. Only the gospel gives us the power to do this, because only the gospel tells us we're already fully loved and accepted in Christ.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you absorbed the ultimate insult for us on the cross. Give us your Spirit so we can absorb the smaller insults that come our way. Help us trust you instead of defending ourselves. Make us people who break cycles of revenge rather than continuing them. Amen.
