Matthew 3:11
“I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”

Title: The Greater Baptism Coming
Scripture: Matthew 3:11

John's words hit like a hammer. He baptizes with water, sure, but someone else is coming who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. That's not a gentle image. Fire burns. It purifies. It consumes. John's baptism was an outward washing for repentance. Jesus' baptism would go deeper, straight to the heart.

The crowds came to John for a ritual they could see and feel. Water on skin. A moment of emotion. But Jesus brings something they couldn't control or manufacture. The Holy Spirit isn't a symbol. He's God himself, moving into our lives to actually change us. And the fire? That's God's judgment against sin, refining some and destroying others. No one stands neutral when Christ comes.

We like our religion manageable. A prayer here, a donation there, maybe skip a bad habit for a week. But Jesus doesn't offer manageable. He brings the Spirit who convicts us of sin we didn't even know we had. He brings fire that exposes every fake thing in our lives. This isn't about getting your life together before God accepts you. It's about God tearing down your life and rebuilding it with living stone.

Look at your own heart. Are you playing it safe with a little religion, or have you been seized by the living God? The Spirit doesn't come to improve your life. He comes to take it over. Fire doesn't negotiate with wood. It burns it. Christ isn't asking you to add him to your priorities. He's demanding you surrender the whole thing.

This means daily death to self. When you wake up tomorrow, the Spirit will put his finger on something you love more than God. Maybe it's your reputation. Maybe it's your comfort. Maybe it's that secret sin you think you control. The fire will come to burn it up. You can cling to it and get burned, or you can drop it and watch Christ replace it with something real.

Prayer: Lord, we admit we often want a safe religion we can control. Break our control. Send your Spirit to burn away everything false in us. Make us people who don't just get wet with baptism, but get set on fire with your presence. Amen.
