Title: Your Names Are Written
Scripture: Luke 10:20

The seventy-two came back pumped. "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!" They had seen power flow through them, and it felt good. Jesus doesn't squash their joy, but he redirects it. He tells them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." That's a picture of certain defeat. The real victory isn't that you controlled demons; it's that God has crushed the serpent's head.

Then Jesus gives them a safeguard for their souls. "Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." The first joy is short-lived. It depends on results, on what you can see and measure. The second joy is rock-solid. It rests on God's choice, not your performance. One day the miracles will stop, the crowds will leave, and your own strength will fail. But the record in heaven will still stand.

We all like tangible success. A full sanctuary, a balanced budget, kids who behave, a promotion at work. Those things feel good because we can point to them. Jesus isn't saying results are evil. He's saying they make a lousy foundation. If your joy rises and falls with what you can see, you will live on an emotional roller coaster. If your joy is anchored to God's invisible decree, you can sleep in a storm.

How do you know your name is written there? Jesus told his disciples later that night, "I have revealed your name to those you gave me." The evidence is not your power but your trust in Christ. Do you look to him for mercy? Do you hate your sin and cling to his cross? Then your name is there, engraved by the same hand that holds the universe. The book will never be erased, and no one can snatch you out of the Father's hand.

This truth keeps us humble when God uses us, and it keeps us steady when he doesn't. Whether the meeting goes well or the kids melt down, whether the treatment works or the bank account drops, the final verdict is already in. Your citizenship is secure. So serve hard, pray fervently, give generously, but rejoice mainly in this: God has written your name in his book, and it can never be blotted out.

Prayer: Father, we confess how quickly we chase visible success. Turn our eyes from our scorecard to your book of life. Fix our joy where it cannot be shaken: in your unbreakable love through Jesus. Amen.
