John says they went out “for the sake of the name.” Not for applause, not for a paycheck, not for adventure. They traveled because Jesus deserved to be known. That single motive kept them moving when the road got hard. It kept them preaching when doors slammed shut. It kept them generous when their own wallets were thin.
The church back then had no buildings, no budgets, no marketing plans. They had a message: God has sent His Son to save sinners. These missionaries bet everything on that message. They walked the Roman roads, slept in strangers’ homes, and ate whatever was set before them. They counted discomfort cheap if even one soul believed.
That same call reaches us today. Most of us will not sail overseas, but we still go out for His name. We leave the house in the morning carrying Christ with us. We speak kindly to the difficult neighbor because Jesus is worthy of a good reputation. We give to the offering plate even when the budget is tight, because the gospel must reach the next town. We forgive the church member who wronged us, so that the name we wear stays honorable.
Going out for His name will cost you. It might cost sleep, money, popularity, or the last slice of your day. Expect that. Jesus told us to carry a cross, not a cushion. Yet the loss is temporary; the honor is eternal. When you stand before the Father, you will not regret one dollar or one minute spent making Jesus known.
Prayer: Lord, make us people who live for the sake of Your name. When we are tired, remind us that Jesus is worth every mile. Send us out tomorrow with the gospel on our lips and love in our hearts. Amen.
