He's speaking to people who might actually miss a meal.
Your anxiety reveals what you treasure. When your mind spins about money, you're acting like an orphan who must fend for himself. When you lose sleep over your portfolio or your pantry, you're confessing that you don't believe God will keep His promises. Jesus isn't scolding you for having legitimate needs. He's exposing the unbelief that drives your panic. The same God who feeds the ravens and clothes the lilies has already demonstrated His commitment to you through the cross. Why would He save your soul and then forget to feed your body?
The Gentiles chase after these things. They run hard after security, comfort, and pleasure because they have no Father who loves them. But you do. When you join their frantic pursuit, you're living like an unbeliever. You're saying that God's kingdom might be nice for eternity, but you need something more practical for right now. Jesus turns the whole system upside down. Stop seeking comfort. Stop seeking security. Start seeking the King who rules over both.
Seeking first His kingdom means you start each day asking one question: How can I honor Christ today? Not how can I get ahead. Not how can I protect myself. How can I advance God's reign in my home, my workplace, my neighborhood? This changes everything about your priorities. Your calendar becomes a tool for serving Christ, not just managing your life. Your money becomes resource for kingdom work, not just personal comfort. Your relationships become opportunities to display God's reign, not just connections to maintain.
Here's what happens when you live this way: all these things get added to you. Not maybe. Not if you're lucky. They get added. God becomes your financial advisor, your career counselor, your retirement planner. He knows what you need before you ask. He determined the day of your death before you drew your first breath. Do you think He'll forget to feed you today? The problem isn't His memory. It's your faith.
This isn't prosperity gospel nonsense. Jesus isn't promising yachts and mansions. He's promising that your Father will give you exactly what you need to serve Him today. Sometimes that means plenty. Sometimes that means just enough. But it always means enough. Paul learned to be content with little and with much because he understood this principle. The kingdom comes first. Everything else follows.
Prayer: Father, forgive us for living like practical atheists. We worry because we forget You're our Father. Teach us to seek Your kingdom first, then trust You to add what we need. Give us grace to stop chasing what the Gentiles chase, and start living like children of the King. Amen.
