Beloved in Christ,
As we gather today, let us turn our hearts and minds to the Scriptures, seeking wisdom and guidance from the Word of God. Today, we will reflect on James 1:19-27, a passage that calls us to be doers of the word and not merely hearers.
"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do." (James 1:19-25)
In these verses, James urges us to be not only hearers but also doers of the word. It is not enough to simply listen to the word of God; we must put it into practice in our lives. This requires humility, self-reflection, and a commitment to live according to God's will.
The passage also reminds us of the importance of controlling our anger and avoiding moral filth. As followers of Christ, we are called to live lives that reflect the righteousness of God, and this requires us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.
So, as we reflect on this passage today, let us ask ourselves: Are we merely hearers of the word, or are we doers of the word? Are we living lives that reflect the righteousness of God, or are we allowing our anger and sinful desires to control us?
May we strive to live according to God's will, humbly accepting the word planted in us and putting it into practice in our lives. And may we trust in the promises of God, knowing that He will bless us as we seek to follow Him.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word, which guides us and gives us life. Help us to be not only hearers but also doers of your Word. Give us the strength and courage to live according to your will, and to reflect your righteousness in our lives. May we trust in your promises and seek to follow you always. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
