Jesus is about to leave the crowd. He has spoken plainly about his death, and now he gives one last command before hiding himself from them. "Believe in the light while you have the light," he says. This is urgent. The light will not shine forever in this visible way. Soon the Son of Man will be lifted up, and the opportunity to see and believe will pass.
What does it mean to believe in the light? It means more than agreeing with facts about Jesus. The crowd had seen his miracles. They had heard his teaching. But most would not trust him. They liked the signs, but they refused to follow the One the signs pointed to. Believing in the light means staking your life on Jesus. It means admitting you walk in darkness without him, and then walking his way even when you cannot see far ahead.
Notice the promise attached to the command. "Believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." Jesus does not merely offer information. He offers transformation. When you believe in him, you do not simply gain new opinions. You gain a new identity. You become part of the light you trust. The darkness that once ruled you loses its grip. You begin to think, speak, and act like children of the day.
This is not a decision you can afford to postpone. Jesus speaks as if the door is closing. "While you have the light" implies the light is here now, but it will not always be offered in this way. Every time you hear the gospel and refuse it, your heart grows a little harder. Every time you put off following Christ, the darkness feels more normal. The opportunity to believe is not endless. Today, not someday, is the day of salvation.
So what do you do with this verse? Stop waiting for more evidence. You already have enough light to walk by. If you keep saying, "I'll follow Jesus when I understand everything," you will die in darkness. Trust him now with what you do know. Admit you are not the light. Admit you need mercy. Then walk in his light, even when the path is hard to see. The same Jesus who commands you to believe promises to make you light as you do.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we have seen your light in your Word. Forgive us for lingering in darkness when you call us to come out. Give us faith to believe you today, not tomorrow. Make us children of light, that we might reflect you in this dark world. Amen.
