Title: Preach the Word When It's Hard
Scripture: 2 Timothy 4:2

Paul writes these words to a young pastor, but they land on all of us who claim to follow Christ. Preach the word. That is the first command. Not preach your opinions, not share your feelings, not give practical tips. Preach the word. The written word that God has already spoken. Timothy's job, and ours, is to repeat what God has said, not invent something new. This word is fixed, finished, and sufficient. We do not need to improve it. We need to deliver it.

Paul adds four timing words: be ready in season and out of season. That means when people want to hear it and when they do not. Most days are out of season. People are busy, distracted, or openly hostile. That does not change the assignment. The doctor does not skip surgery because the patient is cranky. The mail carrier does not stay home because it is raining. We speak God's word whether the room is friendly or cold. Faithfulness is measured by obedience, not applause.

Next comes reprove, rebuke, and exhort. These are not popular verbs. Reprove means to show someone they are wrong. Rebuke means to tell them to stop. Exhort means to call them to something better. All three require courage. You cannot do this work while trying to be everyone's buddy. You also cannot do it while trying to win arguments. The goal is not victory over people, but victory for people. We speak hard truth because we want them to live.

Paul adds two more instructions: with complete patience and teaching. Patience keeps us from yelling. Teaching keeps us from merely scolding. People grow slowly. They ask the same questions ten times. They make the same foolish choices. God has been patient with us; we extend the same patience to them. We also teach. We explain why God's way is better. We show how the gospel connects to their finances, their temper, their marriage. We do not just point at the problem; we point to the solution.

This verse is not only for pastors. Parents teach children at breakfast. Co-workers speak up when the conversation turns ugly. Friends correct friends who are drifting. The word must be preached, and most of it happens outside the church building. You do not need a pulpit. You need a Bible you have read and a heart that loves people enough to tell them the truth. Start there. God will open doors.

Prayer: Lord, make us faithful to speak your word when it is easy and when it costs us. Give us courage to reprove, patience to teach, and love that keeps us at the task. Amen.
