Anticipating God's Promises in Times of Uncertainty
As we journey through the ups and downs of life, our hearts long to grasp the promises of God, to hold onto them as an anchor for our souls. In Hebrews 6:19, we're reminded that this anchor is "sure and steadfast," a hope that enters into the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf. The promises of God are not mere wishes or possibilities, but certainties that are rooted in the character of our faithful God, who does not lie and is not capable of breaking His word (Titus 1:2, Hebrews 6:18).
As we await the fulfillment of these promises, we're called to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). This means trusting in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when the circumstances of our lives seem to contradict His promises. In Romans 4, we see the example of Abraham, who against all hope, believed in hope, and was strengthened in his faith, giving glory to God (Romans 4:20-21). His story encourages us to trust in the God who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist (Romans 4:17).
As we anticipate God's promises, we're reminded that our hope is not in the promises themselves, but in the Promise-Maker. Our confidence is in the One who has sworn by His own name, saying, "I will not forget you" (Isaiah 49:15-16). In the midst of uncertainty, we can cling to the unchanging nature of our God, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). May our hearts be filled with the joy and peace that come from trusting in God's promises, and may we, like Abraham, be strengthened in our faith, giving glory to our faithful God.
