Applying Biblical Principles Rather Than Replicating Practices
Christian theology often distinguishes between adhering to biblical principles and merely replicating historical practices. This distinction emphasizes that while certain practices may have been culturally specific or temporary, the underlying principles they embodied remain eternally relevant [7, 9].
The author of Hebrews encourages believers to "press on to perfection—not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God" [1]. John Gill interprets this as a call to move beyond the "first principles of the Gospel" and the "rites and ceremonies of the law," not with contempt, but by not dwelling on them as the primary focus of ministry [6, 7]. This suggests a progression from foundational elements to a deeper understanding of Gospel truths, implying that while the core tenets remain, their expression and emphasis may evolve.
Jesus himself affirmed the enduring authority and principles of the Old Testament, stating, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets" [10]. This indicates that the moral and theological principles embedded in the Law and Prophets are not abolished but fulfilled and deepened in Christ. The New Covenant, described in Hebrews, is "very different from, and far superior to, the old covenant," not in its fundamental moral demands, but in its ability to enable obedience through an "inward impulse producing love because of the forgiveness of our sins" [8]. This highlights a shift from external adherence to internal transformation, a key principle of the new covenant.
Self-denial, for instance, is presented as a principle exemplified by Christ and necessary for following him [3]. This principle involves denying ungodliness, controlling appetites, and abstaining from fleshly lusts [3]. While the specific ways self-denial is practiced might vary across cultures and times, the underlying principle of prioritizing God's will over personal desires remains constant. Similarly, the principle of avoiding flattery is consistently taught throughout scripture, with warnings against its use by saints, ministers, and the wicked [2].
Adam Clarke, in his commentary on Galatians, emphasizes that the "only rule for a Christian is the word of Christ; the only pattern for his imitation is the example of Christ" [5]. He cautions against comparing oneself with others, as they are not the standard. This underscores the importance of grounding one's life in the direct principles and example of Christ rather than merely imitating the practices of others, which may not always align with the divine pattern [5]. Josephus also notes that those who wish to live well and legislate for others should "consider the Divine nature" and "imitate the best of all patterns," which is God's operations, as far as human nature allows [4]. This ancient perspective aligns with the Christian emphasis on divine principles as the ultimate guide.
