Attributes of God as Revealed in the Bible
The Bible presents God as a being with distinct attributes that reveal His nature and character. These attributes are not merely abstract concepts but are demonstrated through His actions in creation and redemption [6]. The existence of God is assumed throughout the biblical narrative rather than argued for [1].
One of the primary attributes of God is His power. This power is described as great, strong, glorious, mighty, and everlasting [3]. It is expressed through various biblical metaphors, such as the "voice of God" (Psalm 29:3, 5), the "finger of God" (Exodus 8:19), the "hand of God" (Exodus 9:3), and the "arm of God" (Job 40:9) [3]. God's power is effectual, irresistible, and incomparable, demonstrating His sovereignty over all things (Daniel 4:35) [3]. Jeremiah affirms that God's power, wisdom, and understanding are the attributes by which He creates and sustains creation [11].
God's glory is closely related to His power and majesty [4, 9]. It is exhibited in Christ (John 1:14), in His name (Deuteronomy 28:58), in His majesty (Psalm 145:5, 12), and in His works (Psalm 19:1) [4]. The glory of the Lord was tangibly expressed at significant moments in Israel's history, such as on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:16) and at the dedication of the Tabernacle (Exodus 40:34-35) and Solomon's Temple (1 Kings 8:11) [9]. The New Testament further reveals Christ as the image of God's glory, manifesting it to the world and being glorified in His death and resurrection (John 1:14; 2 Corinthians 4:4) [9].
Holiness is another fundamental attribute of God. It describes God's person and nature [5, 9]. The seraphim in Isaiah's vision ceaselessly declare God as "Holy, holy, holy," which is considered the highest worship affirmation in Scripture, emphasizing His ultimate holiness [8]. This attribute serves as the standard for human holiness, with commands for people to be holy as God is holy (Leviticus 19:2; 1 Peter 1:15-16) [5]. Holiness is necessary for worshiping God and for seeing Him (Hebrews 12:14) [5].
God's wisdom and understanding are also highlighted as attributes used in creation and sustenance [11]. His justice, love, fairness, and righteousness are integral to His rule (Psalm 99:4) [10]. God desires His people to demonstrate love (Hebrew khesed), which includes faithfulness, and to know Him intimately, rather than merely offering sacrifices or burnt offerings (Hosea 6:6) [12].
The Bible also reveals God's eternal nature (Romans 1:20) [6]. The names used for God in the Hebrew Bible, such as 'El, 'Eloah, and 'Elohim, convey strength and divinity [1]. The name Jehovah (rendered "LORD" in many English translations) is another primary designation for the Supreme Being [1].
The revelation of God's attributes culminates in Jesus Christ. He is described as God, the Son of God, one with the Father, the firstborn, the first-begotten, Lord of lords, and the image of God [2]. Christ is also identified as the Creator (John 1:3), Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5), Prophet (Deuteronomy 18:15-16), Priest (Psalm 110:4), King (Isaiah 6:1-5), and Judge (Matthew 16:27) [2].
