Balancing Allegory and Example in Biblical Communication
Biblical communication frequently employs both allegory and example, often through literary forms such as parables, to convey spiritual truths. An allegory is a figure of speech where a representation of one thing is intended to excite the representation of another, containing both an immediate, historical sense and an ultimate, signified meaning [1]. A parable, derived from the Greek parabole meaning "placing beside" or "comparison," is a similitude or illustration of one subject by another [3, 4]. Every parable can be considered an allegory [2].
The Bible uses allegorical narratives and parables in various contexts. For instance, Nathan's address to David in 2 Samuel 12:1-4 is an allegorical narrative [2]. The book of Ezekiel contains riddles and parables, such as the parable of the two eagles and the vine in chapter 17, which the prophet is appointed to explain to the house of Israel [7]. Marriage is often used allegorically in the Bible to symbolize the covenant relationship between God and his people, while adultery symbolizes spiritual unfaithfulness [8, 9]. The apostle Paul also uses allegory, as seen in Galatians 4:24, where he refers to the history of Isaac and Ishmael allegorically [2].
In the New Testament, Jesus frequently taught in parables, which are stories that typically draw an analogy between a common aspect of life and a spiritual truth [5]. These parables often use surprising or evocative imagery to emphasize concepts like the growth of the Kingdom of God from insignificant beginnings to a glorious consummation, or to encourage patience [6]. Examples include the parables of the sower (Matthew 13:3-9) and the mustard seed (Matthew 13:31-33) [5, 6, 10]. To understand a parable, it is crucial to identify its central analogy and interpret it within its historical and Gospel context, avoiding speculative allegorical meanings not intended by the author [5].
While parables are a form of allegory, the term "parable" in the New Testament has a wide application, sometimes referring to proverbs, prophetic utterances, enigmatic maxims, or expanded metaphors [3, 4]. The Old Testament also contains allegorical descriptions, such as the depiction of old age in Ecclesiastes 12:2-6 [2].
