Balancing Example-Based Faith with Personal Discernment in Scripture
The Christian life involves both following biblical examples and exercising personal discernment. Scripture frequently presents figures, most notably Jesus Christ, as patterns for belief and conduct. For instance, Christ is depicted as an example of self-denial (Matthew 4:8-10; John 6:38; Romans 15:3; Philippians 2:6-8), diligence (Mark 1:35; Luke 2:49), sincerity (1 Peter 2:22), and holy boldness (John 7:26) [1, 2, 3, 4]. Ministers are also called to be examples of sincerity (Titus 2:7) [3]. The "work of faith" is understood as the active reality of faith, demonstrating itself through continuous action rather than mere assent [5].
However, this emphasis on example does not negate the need for individual examination and discernment. Adam Clarke, in his commentary on Galatians 6:4, stresses that believers should "prove his own work" by examining their conduct against the words and example of Christ. one tradition argues that the word of Christ is the sole rule for a Christian, and Christ's example is the only pattern for imitation. Comparing oneself to others, who may be weaker or less instructed, is not the appropriate standard [6]. This suggests that while examples provide a framework, personal application requires careful self-assessment.
The concept of diligence, for example, is not only exemplified by Christ but also explicitly required by God in various aspects of life, such as seeking Him (1 Chronicles 22:19; Hebrews 11:6), obeying Him (Deuteronomy 6:17; 11:13), and striving for perfection (Philippians 3:13-14) [2]. This indicates that while examples inspire, the individual is responsible for actively pursuing these virtues. The balance lies in drawing inspiration and guidance from biblical examples while personally and diligently applying these principles to one's own life through careful discernment.
