Balancing God's Sovereignty with Human Suffering in Scripture
The biblical narrative presents a complex interplay between God's sovereignty and the reality of human suffering, often portraying suffering as both a consequence of human action and a divinely permitted or purposed experience. Scripture affirms God's ultimate control over all things [7], yet it also acknowledges the profound pain and injustice experienced by humanity.
One perspective found in Scripture is that suffering can be a direct result of sin and disobedience. Proverbs states that "evil people suffer the consequences of their own actions," and God ensures that sinners receive their proper punishment [12]. Similarly, Paul in Romans describes God's anger as a "necessary response to sin" [11]. Ephesians 2:2 suggests that human sin results from being governed by the devil and powers of evil [10].
However, suffering is not always depicted as a direct punishment for individual sin. The book of Job, for instance, challenges the simplistic notion that suffering is solely a consequence of personal wrongdoing [8]. Instead, it explores the mystery of righteous suffering. The New Testament further develops this theme, particularly in the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus, though without sin, "endured the cross, despising the shame" [2]. His human nature meant he experienced the "infirmities of human nature" and was "afflicted in his body and human soul just as other men are" [6, 14]. This suffering was part of God's sovereign will, as Jesus's death was "as the Scriptures declared," fulfilling prophecies about a suffering Messiah [13, 15].
For believers, suffering can be a means through which God works. Christians are instructed not to be surprised by trials, as hostility from a sinful world is expected [9]. Enduring pain unjustly, "because of conscience toward God," is considered commendable [4]. God is portrayed as a refuge and strength for the afflicted, offering comfort and preservation [1]. He delivers and supports those who suffer [1]. Even in weakness, believers can live through God's power [5]. The cross of Christ is presented as the means by which God reconciles humanity to himself, slaying hatred [3].
