Balancing Law and Gospel in Christian Theology and Practice
The concepts of law and gospel represent distinct but interrelated aspects of divine revelation, particularly concerning humanity's relationship with God. The law, often identified with the Mosaic Law, refers to God's expressed will and commandments [8]. The gospel, conversely, centers on the grace and truth realized through Jesus Christ [6].
The law of God is described as absolute, perpetual, pure, spiritual, holy, just, good, and perfect [4, 17]. It was given to Adam, Noah, and the Israelites through Moses and the ministration of angels [4]. The law requires perfect obedience, not only outwardly but also of the heart [4]. Righteousness is defined as obedience to God's law [1]. However, no mere human can perfectly keep the law [18]. The law serves to awaken a sense of sin in the ungodly [16].
The gospel, on the other hand, offers Christian liberty, which is conferred by God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit through the gospel itself [3]. This liberty is freedom from the law, its curse, the fear of death, sin, and corruption [3]. Christ fulfilled the law [1]. He is the end of the law for righteousness [1]. The blessing promised to Abraham, which includes receiving the Holy Spirit, is equated with the blessing Gentiles receive through Christ [14]. This means that Gentile Christians are considered true children of Abraham by faith, not by adherence to the Mosaic Law [13].
Despite the distinction, the law retains a significant role. The apostle Paul clarifies that the law is good when used lawfully, not as a means of attaining perfection beyond the gospel, but as a tool to reveal sin [16]. The entire law can be summarized by the command to love one's neighbor as oneself [11, 15]. This love is considered the "law of Christ" [5, 15]. Carrying one another's burdens fulfills this law of Christ [5, 12]. Therefore, while salvation results in godliness, it is not achieved through legalistic adherence but through faith that expresses itself in love [9, 11].
Christian conduct involves believing, fearing, loving, and obeying God, as well as believing in, loving, and obeying Christ [7]. It also includes following Christ's example and living righteously [7]. Diligence is required in seeking God, obeying Him, striving for perfection, cultivating Christian graces, and guarding against defilement [2]. This diligence is not a means to earn salvation but a response to the grace received through the gospel. The "Israel of God" refers to the spiritual seed of Abraham by faith, not those who adhere to the Mosaic Law [10].
