Biblical Causes for Lake of Fire Judgment
The biblical concept of the "lake of fire" is primarily found in the book of Revelation, where it is depicted as a place of eternal punishment for God's enemies [9]. Revelation 20:14 explicitly states, "Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire" [2]. This imagery of fire as a divine judgment is rooted in older biblical traditions.
One significant cause for judgment by fire is disobedience to God's law and contempt for His word. Isaiah 5:24 declares that those who "have cast off the Law of the Lord of hostes, and contemned the word of the holy one of Israel" will be consumed by fire, their root becoming rottenness and their bud rising like dust [4]. Similarly, Deuteronomy 32:22 speaks of fire kindled in God's wrath that will burn to the bottom of hell and consume the earth [3, 7].
Specific sins are also highlighted as causes for fiery judgment. Sexual immorality and "going after strange flesh" led to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by "eternal fire," serving as an example of punishment [6, 12]. The book of Revelation also indicates that those "not knowing God, and to those not obeying the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ" will face "flaming fire giving full vengeance" [5]. The "beast" and the "false prophet" are among the first to be cast into this fiery lake [9]. Ultimately, the devil, who deceived humanity, will also be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone [10].
The lake of fire is understood as a place of eternal punishment [9]. Augustine of Hippo, a significant patristic theologian, discusses the nature of this fire, considering whether it is a material fire that can affect immaterial spirits like devils [11]. He also interprets the casting of "Death and hell" into the lake of fire as designating the devil [8]. The imagery of fire as a divine judgment is also seen in other contexts, such as the destruction of Babylon in Revelation, where it is said that "in fire she shall be utterly burned" due to the judgment of the Lord God [1].
