Biblical Examples of Spiritual Truths and Principles
The Bible presents numerous spiritual truths and principles through direct instruction, narrative examples, and the life of Jesus Christ. These truths often relate to human conduct, divine character, and the nature of faith.
One foundational principle is the inspiration and authority of Scripture itself. The Bible is described as "given by inspiration of God" and "given by inspiration of the Holy Spirit" [6]. Christ sanctioned the Scriptures by appealing to them and teaching from them [6]. This establishes the Bible as the primary source for understanding spiritual truths.
Sincerity is a recurring theme. Christ exemplified sincerity, as noted in 1 Peter 2:22 [1]. Ministers are called to be examples of sincerity (Titus 2:7), and it should characterize believers' love for God (2 Corinthians 8:8, 24), love for Christ (Ephesians 6:24), and service to God (Joshua 24:14; John 4:23, 24) [1]. Sincerity should also mark one's faith (1 Timothy 1:5), love for others (Romans 12:9; 1 Peter 1:22; 1 John 3:18), and overall conduct (2 Corinthians 1:12) [1]. Even the preaching of the gospel is to be done with sincerity (2 Corinthians 2:17; 1 Thessalonians 2:3-5), though it can sometimes be preached without it (Philippians 1:16) [1].
Another significant principle is zeal. Christ demonstrated zeal (Psalm 69:9; John 2:17), and godly sorrow can lead to it (2 Corinthians 7:10, 11) [2]. Saints are encouraged to exhibit ardent zeal (Psalm 119:139) in their spirit (Romans 12:11), in well-doing (Galatians 4:18; Titus 2:14), and in desiring the salvation of others (Acts 26:29; Romans 10:1) [2]. Zeal is also important for contending for the faith (Jude 1:3) and for missionary labors (Romans 15:19, 23), as well as for the glory of God (Numbers 25:11, 13) and the welfare of saints (Colossians 4:13) [2]. However, zeal can be misdirected, as seen in examples like 2 Samuel 21:2, Acts 22:3,4, and Philippians 3:6 [2].
Resignation, particularly to God's will, is another spiritual truth. Christ provided the ultimate example of resignation in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39-44; John 12:27; 18:11) [3]. Believers are commanded to be resigned (Psalm 37:7; 46:10) and to submit to God's will (2 Samuel 15:26; Psalm 42:5, 11; Matthew 6:10) and sovereignty (Romans 9:20, 21) [3]. This resignation extends to the prospect of death (Acts 21:13; 2 Corinthians 4:16-5:1), loss of possessions or children (Job 1:15, 16, 21), chastisements (Hebrews 12:9), and bodily suffering (Job 2:8-10) [3].
The example of Christ serves as a perfect model for believers [4]. Conformity to Christ's example is required in holiness (1 Peter 1:15, 16; Romans 1:6), righteousness (1 John 2:6), purity (1 John 3:3), and love (John 13:34; Ephesians 5:2; 1 John 3:16) [4]. Other virtues exemplified by Christ include humility (Luke 22:27; Philippians 2:5, 7), meekness (Matthew 11:29), obedience (John 15:10), and self-denial (Matthew 16:24; Romans 15:3) [4]. He also demonstrated ministering to others (Matthew 20:28; John 13:14, 15), benevolence (Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9), forgiving injuries (Colossians 3:13), overcoming the world (John 16:33; 1 John 5:4), and being guileless (1 Peter 2:21-22) [4].
Meekness, a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23), is also exemplified by Christ (Psalm 45:4; Isaiah 53:7; Matthew 11:29; 21:5; 2 Corinthians 10:1; 1 Peter 2:21-23) [5]. Saints are encouraged to seek meekness (Zephaniah 2:3), put it on (Colossians 3:12-13), receive the word of God with it (James 1:21), and exhibit it in their conduct (James 3:13) [5]. Ministers are to follow after meekness (1 Timothy 6:11) and instruct opposers with it (2 Timothy 2:24, 25) [5].
The concept of truth is central to biblical teaching. Psalm 85:11 states, "Truth springs out of the earth. Righteousness has looked down from heaven" [7]. This verse, along with Psalm 85:10, which says "Mercy and truth meet together," highlights the interconnectedness of divine attributes [9]. The "mercy and truth" of God are understood as His grace in promising and faithfulness in performing [10]. These principles are not merely abstract but are meant to be lived out, as seen in the call for believers to "Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts" (Psalm 139:23) [8]. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to understand and recognize spiritual truth, enabling them to discern what aligns with apostolic teaching [11].
