Biblical Teachings on the Holy Spirit's Role
The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is a wondrous and mysterious gift to believers, as seen in the outpouring of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost, where the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4). The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is the Helper, sent by Jesus Christ to abide with believers forever, as He promised in John 14:16-17, where Jesus says, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, as Jesus taught in John 16:8-11, and it is through the Spirit that believers are born again, as Jesus explained to Nicodemus in John 3:5-8, where He says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."
As the Spirit of Truth, He guides believers into all truth, illuminating the Scriptures and enabling them to understand the things of God, as seen in 1 Corinthians 2:10-16, where the apostle Paul writes, "For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God." The Holy Spirit also empowers believers for witness and service, as seen in Acts 1:8, where Jesus commands the disciples to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, and in Ephesians 3:16, where Paul prays that believers would be strengthened with power through the Spirit in their inner being. Through the Spirit, believers are able to put to death the deeds of the flesh and live a life that is pleasing to God, as taught in Romans 8:13, where Paul writes, "For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." As believers, we are called to walk by the Spirit, to be filled with the Spirit, and to live a life that is surrendered to the Spirit's leading, as seen in Galatians 5:16-25 and Ephesians 5:18-21, where we are commanded to walk by the Spirit and to be filled with the Spirit, so that we may not gratify the desires of the flesh, but rather live a life that is characterized by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
