Biblical Truth in Secular Philosophical Systems
In biblical thought, "truth" is a multifaceted concept, often linked with divine revelation, faithfulness, and the person of Christ. The Scriptures are frequently referred to as "the word of truth" or "the Scriptures of truth," indicating their divine origin and reliable content [7]. This truth is not merely factual accuracy but encompasses God's character and his saving work.
The Gospel itself is called "the word of truth" and "the Gospel of salvation" [5, 7]. It is understood as coming from the "God of truth" and having Christ, who is "the truth," as its central theme and substance [1, 5, 7]. The Holy Spirit, often called the "Spirit of truth," guides believers into this truth and makes it effective in their lives [1, 5, 6].
Truth is also associated with God's righteousness and faithfulness. The psalmist declares, "Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness" [8], and "The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting" [4]. This righteousness is revealed in the Gospel and is connected to the righteousness of Christ, which God approves and imputes to believers [4, 8]. In Psalm 85:11, "Truth shall spring out of the earth," which some interpreters understand as referring to the Gospel emerging from Judea, or to the grace of faith springing up in the hearts of believers [2]. Others interpret "truth" in this context as God's faithfulness, manifested through the fulfillment of promises [3].
Worship, according to Jesus in John 4:24, must be "in spirit and in truth." This phrase implies a single concept where God's Spirit reveals God's truth and reality to the worshiper [1]. This understanding emphasizes that true worship is not merely external ritual but an internal, divinely-enabled encounter with God's revealed nature. The concept of truth is thus deeply integrated into the biblical understanding of God's nature, his revelation, and the proper response of humanity.
