Biblical Verses on Avoiding or Minimizing Suffering
Biblical texts offer various perspectives on avoiding or minimizing suffering, often linking it to ethical conduct, trust in God, and the nature of human relationships. One common theme is the avoidance of actions that lead to strife and negative consequences. For instance, Proverbs advises against contention, stating that "strife" is forbidden and can be excited by pride, wrath, and a contentious disposition [2]. Similarly, Psalm 37:8 admonishes, "Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil" [1]. Rashi interprets this verse as a call to desist from wickedness to prevent anger from befalling oneself [10].
The New Testament also emphasizes avoiding behaviors that cause suffering. Paul, in his letters, identifies "strife" as a "work of the flesh" and an evidence of a carnal spirit [2]. He also instructs believers to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them" (Ephesians 5:11 KJV) [7]. This suggests that disassociating from evil practices can prevent entanglement in their negative outcomes.
Another significant aspect of minimizing suffering involves managing one's own anxieties and cares. Jesus explicitly forbids "overmuch care about earthly things," urging followers not to worry about what they will eat or wear (Matthew 6:25; Luke 12:22, 29) [3]. This teaching is rooted in the belief that God's providential goodness should alleviate such anxieties (Matthew 6:26, 28, 30) and that trust in God should free individuals from excessive worry (Jeremiah 17:7-8) [3]. The Apostle Peter echoes this sentiment, advising believers to "cast all your care upon him; for he careth for you" (1 Peter 5:7 KJV) [3]. Such overmuch care is seen as an obstruction to the Gospel and unbecoming for saints [3].
The Bible also addresses how to minimize suffering caused by others, particularly enemies. Instead of retaliating, believers are encouraged to love their enemies, pray for them, and assist them [4]. Christ himself serves as an example, praying for his enemies (Luke 23:34) [4]. The principle is to overcome evil with kindness, as seen in Proverbs 25:21 and Romans 12:20, which suggest feeding a hungry enemy [4]. Furthermore, rejoicing at the misfortunes or failings of enemies is discouraged (Job 31:29; Proverbs 24:17) [4].
While the Bible offers guidance on avoiding self-inflicted suffering and mitigating suffering from others, it also acknowledges that suffering is an inevitable part of the Christian life. Peter instructs Christians not to be surprised by trials, noting that those who live godly lives can expect hostility from a sinful world (John 16:33; Acts 14:22; Romans 8:17; Philippians 1:29) [9]. In such contexts, the focus shifts from avoiding suffering to enduring it with faith. James 5:13 encourages prayer during affliction and singing praises during cheerfulness [8]. The long-suffering of God, which is part of His character (Exodus 34:6; Numbers 14:18), serves as a model and should lead to repentance, thereby averting divine anger [5, 6]. Confession of sin and repentance are presented as means to avert God's anger (Job 33:27-28; Jeremiah 3:12-13) [6].
