Breaking Down Barriers in the Church and Community
The New Testament frequently emphasizes the unity of believers in Christ, transcending various social and ethnic distinctions. This unity is often described using the metaphor of the "body of Christ," where many individual members, despite their differences, form one cohesive whole [1, 3, 7].
Paul's letter to the Corinthians highlights this concept, stating that "the body is not one member but many" (1 Corinthians 12:14). Each part of the body has a unique function determined by God, and all are essential for the body's proper working [1, 3]. John Gill notes that even the "meanest" member is necessary, and its absence would create a deficiency in the church [3]. The church, as the body of Christ, is called to harmony and mutual care among its members [6]. Jamieson, Fausset & Brown explain that each local church is a miniature representation of the entire collective body of churches [2].
This unity in Christ means that traditional barriers, such as those between Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female, are overcome. Galatians 3:28 declares, "There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus" [5]. This passage indicates that all who come to Christ receive God's promises in the same way, forming a single community [5]. Ephesians further elaborates on this, explaining that Christ has broken down the "dividing wall of hostility" between Jewish and Gentile believers, creating "one new humanity" [9]. They are joined together in Christ, becoming a holy temple where the Lord dwells among his people [8].
While believers share a common faith, God also bestows different spiritual gifts and abilities on individuals for the purpose of building up the church [10]. These diverse gifts contribute to the overall strength and growth of the community [10]. The call to unity extends to actively welcoming one another, treating fellow believers as family, just as Christ has accepted all believers despite their flaws [11]. This acceptance and fellowship are symbolized by sharing meals, which signifies deep friendship and covenant relationships [12]. Allegiance to Jesus as Lord is presented as the ultimate factor that transcends differences and fosters harmonious relationships within the body of Christ [4].
