Christ Already Disarmed Every Dark Power
The FINAL episode of a 21-day October series on what Scripture actually says about the spiritual realm. For three weeks we established that the realm is real (Week 1), that Scripture forbids trafficking with it (Week 2), and that Christ has won (Week 3). Tonight — Halloween — it all lands here: the dangerous realm this series took so seriously is a DEFEATED realm.
Colossians 2:15 (KJV):
"And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
Read in context (Colossians 2:13-15), Paul describes two things the cross accomplished at once:
The legal victory (vv. 13-14): "having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross." The record of debt against sinners was cancelled and nailed to the cross.
The cosmic triumph (v. 15): "having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it." The hostile spiritual powers were disarmed and publicly defeated.
These are two faces of one cross. The powers are disarmed PRECISELY BECAUSE the legal claim against sinners is cancelled. Substitution and triumph are inseparable.
Three Greek verbs paint a Roman victory parade.
— "Spoiled" / disarmed (apekdyomai): to strip off — the image of stripping the armor and weapons off a defeated enemy.
— "Made a shew of them openly" (deigmatizō en parrēsia): to make a public example, a public spectacle, boldly and openly.
— "Triumphing over them" (thriambeuō): the Roman triumph. When a Roman general won a decisive victory, he was granted a triumphus — a victory parade through the streets of Rome, in which he led his vanquished enemies, stripped and in chains, as a public display of total conquest.
Paul says Christ did exactly this to the principalities and powers. He stripped them of their weapons, exposed them publicly, and led them in a triumphal procession as defeated captives. (The same verb appears in 2 Corinthians 2:14.)
The great reversal.
Here is the shock at the center of the gospel: the cross LOOKED like Christ's defeat. It was the powers' defeat.
While the soldiers gambled for His garments (John 19:23-24) and the crowd mocked Him, the real transaction was happening above their heads. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8: the crucifixion was "the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world... which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory."
The powers of darkness engineered the crucifixion thinking it was their victory. It was their undoing. Every principality, every power, every dark thing this series has named — the fallen angels, the demons, the territorial spirits, the accuser himself — was being stripped and shamed and led away in chains at the very moment it thought it had won.
What the whole series has been building toward.

Every bit of it resolves here. The realm is real. It is dangerous. And it is DEFEATED.
The "already" and the "not yet."
Colossians 2:15 is decisively past tense. The victory is WON. And yet — the believer still fights (Ephesians 6), still resists the devil (James 4:7), still faces a prowling enemy (1 Peter 5:8).
This is the Reformed "already / not yet." The decisive battle is over; the final enforcement awaits the end. Romans 16:20: "the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet SHORTLY." Revelation 20:10: the devil is finally "cast into the lake of fire." The believer fights FROM a won war toward its final consummation — never in doubt of the outcome.
The Halloween proclamation.
On the one night a year the culture dresses up as witches, demons, and the dead, the church does not say "be afraid," and it does not say "it's all harmless." It says: the powers you are playing with are real — and they are already beaten. Christ triumphed over them openly.
And it is worth remembering (see episode 18): October 31 is also Reformation Day. The series ends on the very day the Reformation began — the recovery of the gospel that proclaims this finished victory.
The three closing hammers.
— The serpent's head is crushed. Genesis 3:15, the first promise of the gospel: the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head.
— The powers are disarmed. Colossians 2:15, the cross's cosmic triumph.
— The tomb is empty. The resurrection (Matthew 28), God's public vindication and seal on the whole victory.
Creation's first promise, the cross's triumph, and the resurrection's proof — the entire sweep of redemption, and the final word over every dark power.
The Reformed anchor.
He is the winner. The serpent's head is crushed, the powers are disarmed, and the tomb is empty. The dark already lost.
Thank you for walking through all 21 episodes. If this series helped you, share it, and send it to someone who needs to know the darkness has already been defeated.
