Cultivating Humility and Reverence in Theological Inquiry
Humility and reverence are essential virtues in theological inquiry, guiding believers in their pursuit of divine knowledge and understanding. Humility, in particular, is identified as a prominent Christian grace [1], a state of mind pleasing to God [1], and necessary for His service [2].
The Bible frequently highlights humility as a characteristic of saints [2], with numerous promises made to the humble [1]. For instance, Psalm 147:6 states that the Lord lifts up the humble, and Isaiah 57:15 speaks of God dwelling with the contrite and humble in spirit [1]. Proverbs 15:33 explicitly links humility with honor, stating, "Before honor is humility" [6]. This suggests that true honor and wisdom are preceded by a humble disposition [11]. John Gill notes that humility involves entertaining mean thoughts of oneself and good thoughts of others, rejoicing in their gifts, and being willing to receive instruction from even the humblest saints [10]. It also includes submission to God's will in adverse circumstances and attributing all one's achievements to divine grace [10].
Christ himself serves as the ultimate example of humility [1, 2]. His humility was evident in taking on human nature (Philippians 2:7), His birth (Luke 2:4-7), His subjection to His parents (Luke 2:51), His poverty (Luke 9:58), and His willingness to become a servant (Matthew 20:28) [3]. He declared His own meekness and lowliness of heart in Matthew 11:29 [2, 5]. This example calls believers to cultivate meekness, which is also a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) [5]. Saints are encouraged to seek meekness, put it on, and receive the word of God with it (James 1:21) [5]. Ministers are specifically instructed to instruct those who oppose themselves with meekness (2 Timothy 2:25) [7, 8].
Reverence, closely related to humility, involves a deep respect and awe for God. The "fear of the Lord" is presented as the beginning of wisdom and a guide for righteous living [11]. This awe of God helps to rectify mistakes and leads to wise counsel [11]. Both humility and reverence preserve the soul in tranquility and foster patience during trials [1]. They are crucial for understanding God's ways and for dealing with knowledge prudently [4]. As Tyndale House notes, humility is fitting when considering humanity's state before God's kindness and love intervened [9].

It is a state of mind well pleasing to God (1 Pet. 3:4); it preserves the soul in tranquillity (Ps. 69:32, 33), and makes us patient under trials (Job 1:22). Christ has set us an example of humility (Phil. 2:6-8). We should be led thereto by a remembrance of our sins (Lam. 3:39), and by the thought that it is the way to honour (Prov. 16:18), and that the greatest promises are made to the humble (Ps. 147:6; Isa. 57:15; 66:2; 1 Pet. 5:5).
