Deepening Intimacy with Jesus Christ through Spiritual Practices
As we seek to grow in our relationship with God, we must remember that it is a divine initiative, one that begins with His sovereign choice to set His affection on us, as we read in Deuteronomy 7:7-8, "The Lord did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath He swore to your ancestors." This truth should humble us and fill us with gratitude, recognizing that our relationship with God is rooted in His unmerited favor. As we respond to this love, we are drawn into a deeper communion with Him, one that is nurtured through the means of grace, such as prayer, Scripture, and fellowship with other believers.
In prayer, we pour out our hearts to God, confessing our sins and expressing our thanksgiving, as the Psalmist encourages us to do in Psalm 51:17, "My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise." As we pray, we must also listen to God's voice, attuning our ears to the whispers of His Spirit, who guides us into all truth, as Jesus promised in John 16:13. The Scriptures, too, are a vital means of deepening our relationship with God, for in them we encounter the very words of God, which are "breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness," as 2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us.
As we immerse ourselves in the Scriptures, we come to know Jesus Christ more intimately, the One who is the very image of the invisible God, as Colossians 1:15 declares. Through our union with Him, we experience the riches of God's love and the power of His resurrection, as Paul writes in Ephesians 3:16-19, "I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith." As we grow in our relationship with God, we are transformed into the likeness of Christ, becoming more conformed to His image, as Romans 8:29 promises. This transformation is a lifelong journey, one that requires patience, perseverance, and a deepening dependence on the Holy Spirit, who sanctifies us and empowers us to live a life that honors God.
