Demons Aren't Ghosts of Dead People

Opening episode of a 21-day October series on what Scripture actually says about the spiritual realm. Hollywood tells us the dead come back as ghosts. Scripture says the dead go to one of two places and demons are an entirely different category of being.

Demons are fallen angels.

The Bible is consistent: demons are angelic beings who rebelled against God, were cast down from their original place, and now oppose His kingdom awaiting final judgment.

Revelation 12:7-9

"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."

2 Peter 2:4

"For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment."

Jude 6

"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."

Three independent witnesses. Fallen angels. Reserved for judgment. Not disembodied humans.

The dead don't become ghosts.

Scripture is equally clear about where human beings go when they die.

The saved go immediately to Christ.
— Luke 23:43 (Jesus to the thief): "Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."
— 2 Corinthians 5:8: "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
— Philippians 1:23: "Having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better."

The lost go to judgment.
— Hebrews 9:27: "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment."
— Luke 16:22-23 (the rich man): "In hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments."

There is no third option. No intermediate wandering. No Earth-bound soul. The Reformed intermediate-state doctrine (Westminster Shorter Catechism Q 37; Westminster Larger Catechism Q 86): believers are made perfect in holiness and immediately pass into glory; the wicked are cast into hell to await final judgment.

Then what are "hauntings"?

If demons are not dead humans, and dead humans are not available for conversation or appearance, every reported encounter with "the departed" has one of two explanations:

  1. A specific extraordinary act of God (rare; 1 Samuel 28 and the Witch of Endor is the clearest biblical case — a future episode in this series).
  2. Demonic deception.

Satan appears as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Demons will absolutely play the role of a dead relative, a comforting presence, a "spirit guide," a familiar voice. The entire point is deception.

The Reformed answer:

The spiritual realm is real. The actors inside it are not necessarily who they claim to be. Discernment is Scripture, not experience.

Pastoral weight:

If a loved one has died in Christ, that loved one is with Christ. They are not available for conversation. Any "contact" is either imagined grief (which is tender and human and not condemned) or demonic imitation (which is dangerous and forbidden). Grieving well is Christian. Seeking contact is not.
