The Old Testament Sacrifices Never Actually Forgave Sins

Did you know Hebrews 10:4 says it is IMPOSSIBLE for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins? Every OT sacrifice was a shadow pointing forward to Christ. The actual atonement was Christ all along — applied backward to Abraham, Moses, David, and every OT saint who trusted in the promised Messiah.

The Text — Hebrews 10:1-4:

"For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near... For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins."

The word "impossible" (Greek adynaton) is absolute. Bulls, goats, lambs, doves — the entire OT sacrificial system could not actually atone.

Every priest. Every Passover. Every Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Never actually removed sin.

Colossians 2:16-17 — "Let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ."

Shadow. Not substance.

Romans 3:25 — "Passed Over Former Sins":

"whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins."

The Greek word paresin (πάρεσιν) means "passing over" — not the ordinary word for forgiveness (aphesis). God WITHHELD His just wrath during the OT era, awaiting Christ's actual satisfaction of the debt on the cross.

The OT saints were not saved by their sacrifices. They were saved by faith in the coming Messiah — with God's justice held in tension until the Lamb arrived.

Christ's Atonement Worked Backward:

Abraham. Moses. David. Isaiah. Every OT saint saved by faith looking forward to the Lamb. Romans 4 — Abraham was justified by faith, not by works. Hebrews 11 says the OT faith heroes "did not receive what was promised... since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect."

The Sufficiency of Christ — Hebrews 10:11-14:

"And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he SAT DOWN at the right hand of God... For by a single offering he has PERFECTED FOR ALL TIME those who are being sanctified."

The sitting posture is theological. Levitical priests stood (their work was never finished). Christ SAT DOWN because His sacrifice was complete forever.

One offering. Perfect. Complete. Never repeated.

The Reformed Reading — Covenant Theology:

Reformed covenant theology (Westminster Confession Ch. 7-8; John Owen; Bavinck) holds ONE covenant of grace across both testaments — administered differently in the OT (types, shadows, promises) and NT (fulfillment in Christ). Every OT sacrifice was a picture pointing forward: Passover lamb → Christ our Passover (1 Cor 5:7); Day of Atonement scapegoat → Christ bearing sin (Isa 53); sin offerings → Christ the sin offering (2 Cor 5:21). John 1:29 — "Behold, the Lamb of God" — the substance had arrived. Reformed atonement theology insists on the once-for-all, complete, unrepeatable nature of Christ's sacrifice (Heb 7:27, 9:12, 10:10-14).

The Pastoral Implication:

The OT sacrificial system never actually forgave sins. Bulls and goats can't atone for image-bearers. But the system pointed forward — every altar, every lamb a signpost. When John saw Jesus he named it: "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."

OT saints looked forward. NT saints look back. Same Christ. Same atonement. The Lamb of God was the reality all along.
