Discerning the Voice of the Holy Spirit in Believers
Discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit involves recognizing how God communicates with believers, primarily through the inspired Word and the inner witness of the Spirit. The Bible is consistently presented as the "Word of God," through which God communicates his will and speaks to humanity [5]. This Word is considered infallible because it was written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, making it free from error in fact, doctrine, or precept [5].
Faith itself comes through "hearing by the word of God" [1, 11]. The Holy Spirit is identified as the "Spirit of truth" and an "Advocate" who counsels and protects believers [7]. This Spirit enables believers to understand and recognize spiritual truth, helping them to discern what aligns with the apostles' teaching about the Father and the Son [12].
The Holy Spirit's witness is described as truth and is to be received implicitly [2]. This witness is borne to Christ as the Messiah, as one who came to redeem and sanctify, and as exalted to be a Savior [2]. The Spirit also confirms the preaching of the gospel and accompanies the faithful preaching of the apostles [2]. Believers receive the Spirit upon believing [2].
The "fruit of the Spirit" is a key indicator of the Spirit's work in a believer's life, encompassing "goodness, righteousness, and truth" [8, 10]. This fruit is seen as a harmonious whole of righteous works, which Calvin describes as resulting from being grafted into Christ, who, through his "living root, makes us fruit-bearing branches" [9]. The Spirit also cultivates hope in believers [6].
While the Spirit speaks, believers are exhorted to "hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies" [4]. The Holy Scriptures, known from childhood, are able to make one "wise unto salvation, through the faith which is in Christ Jesus" [3]. Therefore, discerning the Spirit's voice is intrinsically linked to engagement with and understanding of the biblical text, which is God's primary means of communication [5].
