Effective Evangelism through Biblical Truth and Scripture
Effective evangelism is rooted in the proclamation of biblical truth, which is understood as the inspired Word of God [2]. The apostle Paul exemplified this by fully preaching the Good News of Christ, empowered by signs, wonders, and the Holy Spirit [1]. The "Good News" or evangelion refers to the central message that the Savior has come into the world, a message first proclaimed by evangelists [3].
The Scriptures are considered to be given by the inspiration of God and the Holy Spirit [2]. Jesus himself sanctioned the Scriptures by appealing to them and teaching from them [2]. The Bible is referred to as "the Word," "the Word of God," "the Word of Christ," and "the Word of truth" [2]. This divine origin means that the Gospel is not a "cunningly devised fable" but the "counsel of God," an excellent contrivance for saving sinners [7].
Evangelism, therefore, involves preaching "the word of truth" [4]. This means proclaiming the Gospel sincerely, without adulteration, as it originates from the God of truth, centers on Christ (who is the truth), and is guided by the Spirit of truth [4]. The power of evangelism does not lie in charismatic preaching, finesse, or logical persuasiveness, but in the message itself—centered on Christ's death for sins—and in the convicting power of the Holy Spirit [8]. As Adam Clarke notes, apostles of God cannot bring false doctrine and are influenced by God's Spirit to propagate and establish truth [5].
Mature Christians, grounded in the knowledge of the Good News and Christ, are equipped to discern and resist false teaching [9]. The "good thing"—the everlasting Gospel—is to be kept by the Holy Spirit, who makes it effectual for personal salvation and enables its preaching for the salvation of others [6]. Ministers are called to "preach the word," which can refer to Christ, the essential Word, or the Gospel of salvation, proclaiming it openly, publicly, and boldly without adding to or subtracting from it [10]. The words put into the mouth of God's messengers are his own, whether for the church, prophets, or Christ himself, through whom all promises are fulfilled [11].
