Ensuring Eternal Salvation through Faith and Assurance
As you ponder the certainty of your salvation, remember that it is a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ, as Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us. The assurance of salvation is a precious treasure that every believer can experience, and it is rooted in the unfaltering promises of God. In 1 John 5:13, the apostle writes, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." This knowledge is not based on our feelings or performances, but on the objective truth of God's Word.
The Bible teaches that salvation is a work of God's sovereign grace, as seen in Romans 8:30, where it is written, "And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified." This golden chain of salvation underscores the certainty of our salvation, for if God has begun a work in us, He will surely complete it, as Philippians 1:6 assures us. Moreover, the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirits that we are children of God, as Romans 8:16 affirms, giving us an inner assurance of our adoption into God's family.
As you seek to be sure of your salvation, examine your heart and life in light of Scripture. Do you have a genuine faith in Jesus Christ, demonstrated by a desire to obey His commands and a longing to grow in His likeness? Are you experiencing the fruit of the Spirit, such as love, joy, and peace, as Galatians 5:22-23 describes? While our feelings and experiences can be uncertain, the promises of God are rock-solid, and it is on these promises that we can anchor our assurance of salvation. Remember, your salvation is not based on your own merits or efforts, but on the finished work of Christ, who has paid the full price for your redemption, as seen in 1 Corinthians 6:20. Rest in the certainty of God's love and faithfulness, and let the truth of His Word be the foundation of your assurance.
