Evaluating Non-Scriptural Examples in Light of Scripture
Scripture functions as the authoritative standard by which all claims, examples, and teachings must be measured. Paul declares that all Scripture is "given by inspiration of God" [1], and Peter affirms that prophecy came as "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" [1]. This divine origin establishes the biblical text as the fixed reference point for evaluating any non-scriptural material.
The Primacy of Biblical Authority
Christ himself modeled this evaluative approach by appealing to Scripture when tested (Matthew 4:4) and teaching from it (Luke 24:27) [1]. When the apostles wrote, they distinguished between direct commands from the Lord and their own Spirit-guided judgments. Paul explicitly notes in 1 Corinthians 7:25 that he has "no commandment of the Lord" on a particular matter but offers his judgment under apostolic inspiration [10]. This distinction shows that even apostolic teaching recognized gradations of authority, with Scripture holding the highest position.
The New Testament writers consistently interpreted new revelation by comparing it with existing Scripture. Paul's method involved "comparing spiritual things with spiritual—expounding the Spirit-inspired Old Testament Scripture, by comparison with the Gospel" [8]. This comparative approach established a pattern: later revelation illuminates earlier Scripture, and earlier Scripture validates later claims.
Applying the Standard
When evaluating non-scriptural examples—whether from tradition, experience, or contemporary teaching—the test remains whether they align with the written Word. Jesus rebuked those who searched the Scriptures yet failed to recognize him as their subject [11], demonstrating that correct interpretation requires both diligent examination and submission to Scripture's testimony. The Bereans exemplified this approach by searching the Scriptures daily to verify apostolic preaching (Acts 17:11-12) [11].
Not everything true or useful appears in Scripture; John acknowledges that many of Jesus's works went unrecorded [9]. Yet this does not grant non-scriptural material equal authority. Rather, any claim to truth must not contradict Scripture's explicit teaching and should find support in its principles. The cross-references throughout Scripture show how later texts illuminate earlier ones [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7], establishing an internal coherence that serves as a model for evaluating external claims.
