Faith Defined as Belief Without Evidence

The notion that faith is merely believing without evidence is a common misconception, one that can lead to a misguided understanding of the Christian walk. As the apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:7, "we walk by faith, not by sight," but this does not mean that our faith is devoid of evidence or reason. In fact, the Bible presents faith as a reasonable and informed response to the revelation of God, as seen in Romans 1:20, where it is written that God's invisible attributes are clearly perceived in the things that have been made. The psalmist declares in Psalm 19:1-6 that the heavens proclaim the glory of God, and the skies declare the work of his hands, demonstrating that creation itself bears witness to the existence and character of our Creator.

The concept of faith in Scripture is not about blindly embracing a set of propositions, but rather about trusting in the God who has revealed Himself to us through His Word and His works. As Hebrews 11:1 defines it, faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. This conviction is rooted in the evidence of God's faithfulness and character, as demonstrated throughout redemptive history. The resurrection of Jesus Christ, for instance, serves as a pivotal piece of evidence for the Christian faith, as the apostle Paul argues in 1 Corinthians 15:14-19, stating that if Christ has not been raised, our faith is in vain.

In this sense, faith is not opposed to reason or evidence, but rather, it is a reasonable response to the cumulative case for the existence and character of God, as revealed in Scripture and in the world around us. As we walk by faith, we are not abandoning our faculties of reason, but rather, we are exercising them in a way that takes into account the full range of evidence, including the testimony of Scripture, the witness of creation, and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Ultimately, our faith is not a leap into the dark, but a step into the light, as we trust in the God who has revealed Himself to us and has given us every reason to believe.
