Fellowship with God in Glory and Heaven
Fellowship with God in glory and heaven centers on the believer's eternal presence with the Lord. Paul declares this plainly: "So we will be with the Lord forever" [2]. This perpetual communion represents the consummation of the relationship begun in earthly faith, now perfected beyond the limitations of mortality and sin.
The Nature of Heavenly Fellowship
Fellowship with God consists fundamentally in "the knowledge of his will," "agreement with his designs," "mutual affection," "enjoyment of his presence," "conformity to his image," and "participation of his felicity" [1]. In the glorified state, these elements reach their fullness. The believer beholds God's glory directly—a vision anticipated in the psalmist's desire to see God's power and glory [5]. John Chrysostom's commentary tradition references the promise that "we shall see him as he is" (1 John 3:2), pointing to an unveiled knowledge impossible in this age [8].
The reciprocal nature of this communion appears in the mutual glorification between Christ and his people. One Reformed commentary notes that "the believer's graces redound to Christ's glory, and His glory, as their Head, reflects glory on them as the members" [12]. This exchange fulfills Christ's prayer for unity with the Father and among believers [3, 4].
The Setting of Eternal Communion
The new heaven and new earth provide the context for this fellowship [6, 9]. Revelation's vision of the New Jerusalem depicts God dwelling directly with humanity, where "things that are precious and luxurious on earth are common building materials in heaven" [7]. The city itself functions as a holy temple, with God and the Lamb as its temple and light [9]. This architectural imagery conveys the immediacy of divine presence—no mediation through earthly structures remains necessary [11].
The transformation extends to believers themselves, whose bodies will be changed "into glorious bodies" [10], enabling them to participate fully in the glorified state. This bodily resurrection completes the redemption begun in justification, allowing the whole person—not merely a disembodied soul—to enjoy God's presence eternally.
