Finding Good in Adversity and Trials in Christian Life
Christian theology consistently teaches that adversity and trials, while difficult, can serve a beneficial purpose in the life of a believer. This perspective is rooted in various biblical texts and has been expounded upon by different Christian traditions.
The Apostle Paul, for instance, expresses a profound understanding of this concept, stating, "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong" (2 Corinthians 12:10 KJV) [1, 2]. This passage suggests that weakness and suffering can be avenues for Christ's power to manifest. Similarly, Paul encourages believers to "suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 2:3 ASV) [3].
John Chrysostom, an early Church Father, echoes this sentiment, noting that Christ himself said, "In the world ye shall have tribulation" (John 16:33). Chrysostom further emphasizes that considering the sufferings of Christ can strengthen believers against weariness and fainting in their minds [11].
The idea that trials lead to positive spiritual outcomes is also found in the epistle of James, which states that the testing of faith produces patience (James 1:3). Matthew Henry, a Nonconformist commentator, observes that troubles and afflictions can be the lot of even the most devout Christians, implying that such experiences are not necessarily a sign of divine displeasure but a part of the Christian journey [10]. He also notes that the good behavior of Christians under suffering is crucial for the honor of Christ and their own comfort [13].
John Gill, a Baptist commentator, highlights that "all things work together for good" for those who love God (Romans 8:28). This "good" can encompass temporal, spiritual, and eternal benefits, with afflictions sometimes working for the temporal good of God's children [12]. Gill also encourages believers to "search and try our ways" in times of murmuring and complaining, suggesting that even in adversity, one can find support and instruction by examining God's love, the covenant of grace, and the Scriptures [9].
Patience, a virtue often developed through trials, is described as having its "perfect work" (James 1:4) and is produced by suffering [6]. Hope, another key aspect of Christian life, is obtained through grace, the Word, and the patience and comfort of the Scriptures, and is described as "lively" and "sure and steadfast" [4]. Perseverance, an evidence of reconciliation with God and belonging to Christ, is maintained through the power of God and Christ's intercession [5]. Diligence is also required in seeking God, obeying Him, and striving for perfection [7]. The loving-kindness of God, described as great, excellent, and everlasting, provides comfort and preservation during difficult times [8].
