Formation of Christ in the Believer's Life
The formation of Christ in the believer's life refers to the spiritual transformation by which a Christian increasingly reflects the character and nature of Jesus Christ. This process is often described as becoming a "new creation" in Christ [7].
Central to this concept is the indwelling of Christ in the believer's heart through faith [4]. The apostle Paul prays that believers may "experience... the love of Christ," noting that the Christian life is founded on this personal knowledge and experience of God's grace [8]. This indwelling is not merely an abstract idea but a dynamic presence that completes the believer's life, filling it with "all the fullness of life and power" [8]. The ultimate goal of this formation is for believers to be "conformed to his image and reflect God" [8], growing "unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ" [6].
This spiritual growth is a continuous process. Adam Clarke, a Methodist commentator, emphasizes that believers are to "grow in grace," understanding that "every grace and Divine influence which ye have received is a seed, a heavenly seed, which, if it be watered with the dew of heaven from above, will endlessly increase and multiply itself" [11]. He describes the Christian life as a growth from a "little child" to a "young man, and a father in Christ" [11]. This growth involves continually increasing "in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, as his sacrifice, sanctifier, counsellor, preserver, and final Savior" [11].
The concept of being "in Christ" signifies a profound union. John Gill, a Baptist commentator, explains that while there is an eternal, secret being in Christ for those chosen by God, an "open being in Christ" occurs at conversion when a person believes and gives themselves to Him [10]. This union means that believers are "rooted and built up in him" [12]. As trees are rooted, believers derive their life and nourishment from Christ, producing "fruits of righteousness" [12].
The transformation into Christ's likeness is a work of God's Spirit, which expresses God's life within the believer [13]. This "new nature" is part of the gift of salvation [13]. The promises of God are made in Christ [1], and eternal life itself is found in Christ and given through Him [2]. To know God and Christ is eternal life [2].
The hope of the Christian is centered on Christ [3]. This hope, alongside faith and love, is a fundamental element of Christian character [3]. The formation of Christ in the believer's life is therefore intrinsically linked to the believer's hope, faith, and love, all of which are directed towards Christ, who is the "image of God" and the Creator of all things [5, 9].
