Formation of Christ in the Believer's Life

As we echo the apostle Paul's heartfelt cry, "My little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you" (Galatians 4:19), we are reminded of the profound longing to have Christ's likeness fully expressed in our lives. This is a yearning that resonates deeply within every believer, for we know that it is only as Christ is formed in us that we can truly live out our faith in a way that honors Him. As Paul wrote to the Philippians, "My goal is to know Him and the power of His resurrection" (Philippians 3:10), and it is this intimate knowledge of Christ that enables us to be conformed to His image.

As we seek to have Christ formed in us, we are drawn to the promise of Romans 8:29, where we are told that we have been predestined to be conformed to the image of God's Son. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, who takes up residence within us and begins to transform us from the inside out, as we see in 2 Corinthians 3:18, where we are told that we are being transformed into Christ's likeness with ever-increasing glory. It is a process that involves the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2) and the surrender of our wills to His, that we might be molded and shaped into vessels that are useful for His purposes.

And yet, even as we acknowledge the Spirit's role in this process, we are also reminded that we have a part to play. We must actively seek to know Christ, to abide in Him, and to allow His Word to dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16). As we do, we will find that Christ is indeed being formed in us, and that we are being transformed into His likeness, equipped to live out our faith in a way that brings glory to His name. May we, like Paul, be able to say, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20), and may Christ be fully formed in us, that we might be a reflection of His beauty and grace to a world in need.
