Functionality of Apostles and Prophets in Modern Church
The terms "apostle" and "prophet" refer to specific roles within the early Christian church, with ongoing discussion regarding their function in the modern church. An apostle is generally understood as "one sent forth" [1], a messenger or envoy [2]. In the New Testament, this term primarily designates the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus to preach the gospel and remain with him [1, 2]. However, the word "apostle" also appears to have been used in a broader, non-official sense for Christian messengers and teachers [1], and even as a descriptive designation for Jesus Christ himself as "the Sent of the Father" (Hebrews 3:1) [2]. Paul explicitly identifies himself as an apostle, ordained as a preacher and teacher of the Gentiles (1 Timothy 2:7) [3].
The New Testament describes the church as a unified body with many different parts, each having a specific function determined by God [4, 6, 9, 10]. This body is often referred to as the "body of Christ" [5, 7, 8, 12]. Within this body, various roles and gifts are enumerated, including apostles, prophets, and teachers [13]. Ephesians 4:11 states that Christ "gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers."
Apostles are described as specially commissioned emissaries of Christ [13] and missionary evangelists commissioned by God [11]. They were immediately called by Christ, received their doctrine directly from him, were infallibly guided by the Holy Spirit, had the power to perform miracles, and possessed the authority to preach the Gospel universally and establish churches [14]. This was considered the primary and most significant office in the early church [14].
Prophets, in the New Testament context, are understood not primarily as predictors of the future, but as individuals empowered to speak a message from God [11, 13]. They are distinct from Old Testament prophets, though both speak divine messages [11]. The church is described as being "built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets" (Ephesians 2:20), indicating their foundational role in establishing the early Christian community [11]. This foundation refers to their faithful witness and the teachings they delivered [11].
The question of whether the offices of apostle and prophet continue in the modern church is a point of theological discussion. Some traditions interpret the foundational nature of these roles (Ephesians 2:20) to mean that they were unique to the initial establishment of the church and do not continue in the same authoritative, foundational sense today. Other traditions may understand these roles to continue, perhaps in a modified form, as God continues to call individuals to missionary work (apostles) or to speak His word (prophets). The emphasis on the church as a body with diverse members, each with a God-given function, remains a consistent theme across various interpretations [4, 5, 6, 12].
